Five door hatchback vehicles are becoming increasingly popular in 2018. It's little wonder that all the major car brands are expanding their economy hatchback lines. People are drawn to the easy access of cargo space, family-friendly seating and spacious cabins. It's a bit of a downscale from SUVs, which used to be really popular ten years ago.

Two standout hatchback vehicles on the market today are the 2018 Mazda 3 Hatchback and the 2018 Honda Fit. At a glance, the Mazda 3 looks like a mix between a sports car and a crossover vehicle. The Honda Fit looks like a larger version of a Honda compact vehicle, not a unique offering of its own. Let's take a closer look at the features.

Exterior Design Elements

The design of the Mazda 3 Hatchback is the result of an online competition that asked aspiring designers to make their mark on this iconic vehicle. What they came up with are exterior lines that imply movement. The Honda Fit has also undergone some changes in its third generation such as a sporty front grille which makes it look more like a Dodge Dart at first glance. The Mazda 3 however, has retained its traditional grille which makes it more recognizable on the road. The Honda Fit is available in eight different exterior colors, but there are three almost identical silver finishes that are rather lackluster. The Mazda 3 also has eight exterior colors. Yet, these are less obvious. You get new blends like Snowflake White Pear Mica and Titanium Flash Mica.

The engineers at Mazda have listened to past criticisms of the Mazda 3 Series and the 2018 Mazda 3 now has SKYACTIV-VEHICLE DYNAMICS with G-Vectoring Control. It's a revolutionary technology that shifts the weight of the vehicle and the power output to make turning much smoother. The Honda Fit doesn't have any performance-oriented enhancements to rival the Mazda 3. That's just not what the Honda Fit is all about. The difference is mostly evident in the engine specifications. At it's best, the Honda Fit is capable of achieving 130 horsepower. The base model of the 2018 Mazda 3 Hatchback reaches 155 horsepower and it still gets about the same about of gas mileage on a much larger tank.

Interior Amenities

Inside the cabin, these vehicles are nearly neck-and-neck when it comes to amenities. Both have a 7-inch infotainment display screen and Bluetooth capabilities. The sound system is slightly more sophisticated in the 5-door Mazda 3. It has a nine speaker BOSE surround system while the premium trim Honda Fit only has six economy level speakers. The Mazda 3 hatchback also has more interior space where you need it. The Honda Fit has 95.7 cubic feet of passenger volume on the LX trim whereas the Mazda 3 has 96.4 cu. ft. That might not seem like much, but it can really make the difference on a long ride.

The 2018 Honda Fit is a great economy vehicle, but it's certainly punching up when compared with the 2018 Mazda 3 Hatchback. The Mazda 3 has driver-inspired design elements that were pooled from across the globe. The Honda Fit has focused instead on providing an economical, small package. The Mazda 3 performance capabilities are light years ahead of the Honda Fit, as well. The Mazda 3 and the Honda Fit have great interiors, but the Mazda 3 edges out the competition when you consider the premium level materials and design touches.
