 What's New for the 2017 Mazda3?

Now in its third generation of production, the Mazda3 enters the 2017 model year with a few changes. The compact car gets new trim names, which are Sport, Touring, and Grand Touring. The front and rear fascias are slightly refreshed. The interior gets a new steering wheel, larger door storage pockets, additional standard equipment, and a brand-new electronic parking brake. And new to the Mazda3 is G-Vectoring Control, a technology designed to produce a smoother ride and improved handling. What hasn’t changed, though, is the car’s longstanding SKYACTIVE technology for increasing fuel efficiency and engine output. Also, you have a choice between the four-door sedan and the more spacious five-door hatchback bodystyle.

The Sport and Touring trims of the 2017 Mazda3 go with a 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder (I4) engine that generates 155 horsepower and 150 lb-ft of torque. The Grand Touring gets a larger, 2.5-liter I4 that produces 184 horsepower and 185 lb-ft of torque. (With the hatchback, you can get a Touring with the 2.5-liter engine.) You can choose between a 6-speed manual transmission and a 6-speed automatic transmission; the latter includes manual-shift and Sport modes for greater control over gear shifting and a more exciting driving feel. Exclusive to the Grand Touring trim is the i-ELOOP regenerative braking system for improved energy efficiency. Using a front-engine front-wheel-drive layout, the 2017 Mazda3 peaks at 28 mpg in the city and 37 mpg on the highway. Designed as a five-seater, the vehicle provides a 60/40 split-folding rear seatback for you to expand the amount of cargo room, and front seating includes a 6-way manually adjustable driver’s seat. Go beyond the base-level trim, and you’d increase your chance of replacing the cloth trim with leatherette or perforated leather, adding heating capability on the front seats, and adding manual lumbar support on the front seat. For comfort and convenience, the 2017 Mazda3 starts off with features such as cruise control, steering wheel-mounted controls, remote keyless entry, push-button engine start, Bluetooth connectivity, Mazda Connect technology for infotainment integration, and a six-speaker stereo system that includes HD Radio and a 7-inch color touchscreen. Upper-level standard features include dual-zone automatic climate control, a complimentary four-month SiriusXM satellite radio subscription, and a nine-speaker Bose surround sound system that replaces the six-speaker audio. For safety, the 2017 Mazda3 has dual front impact airbags, dual front seat-mounted side impact airbags, and dual roof-mounted side curtains. Also standard are electronic stability control, hill start assist, traction control, four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes with brake assist and electronic brake-force distribution, and a rearview camera. Added on the Grand Touring are blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, and smart city brake support.
